To know which charger is right for you, you’ll want to consider your EV’s onboard charger, battery capacity, and desired speed of charging.

Chargers are rated by output measured in Amperes (A). A higher amperage charger generally means faster charging time, as long as your EV can accept the higher charging load.

You’ll want to consult your EV dealer or owner’s manual to determine the battery size and onboard charger.

Charging Speed

Adjustable: Some chargers can be adjusted or derated to accommodate your available electrical capacity, reducing the need for electrical upgrades.

Your contractor can assess the maximum ampacity your panel can manage and can adjust the charger amperage output to match during installation.

This may also provide a “future proof” option if you later wish to upgrade your electrical infrastructure should you desire a higher charge rate in the future. Always consult a licensed electrician for service upgrades.

Fixed: These chargers have pre-set amperage, providing simplicity and cost-effectiveness for consistent charging outputs. Your contractor can recommend the maximum output to meet your electrical capacity.

Power Capacity

Hardwired (Recommended): A charger that is wall-mounted in a fixed location and is connected directly to your electrical circuit by a licensed electrician is the preferred and safest installation type.

Plug-in: A charger that has an electrical plug (14-50) can be plugged into a professionally-installed, commercial-grade NEMA outlet and offers the flexibility to move the charger to another residence in the future if needed.

Note: Plug-in chargers are not highly recommended due the potential for nuisance tripping at the main breaker.

Installation Type

Portable Level 2 EV chargers offer convenience and flexibility for charging on the go. They are compact, lightweight, and can be used with a professionally installed NEMA 14-50 outlet.

While they have a lower charging capacity, they provide a temporary charging solution for travelers or those without access to a fixed charging station.
